X-Racer Quadrant BLHeli_32 ESC:25A or 35A, what’s your choice?

Now in the quadcopter industry, BLHeli_32 has gain much attention.BLHeli_32 is the 3rd generation of BLHeli firmware after BLHeli and BLHeli_S. BLHeli_32 runs on an ARM 32bit MCU, initially it will be on a Cortex-M0 running at 48MHz, but there are MCUs out there that can run a lot faster.

Benefit from the Dshot 1200 and BLHeli_32 firmware,  several BLHeli_32 ESCs have earned more popularity.

Today we focus on the new X-Racer Quadrant 32Bit BLHeli_32 ESC. There are two categories: 25A and 35A. Both of them follow the design of previous 4-in-1 design of X-Racer Quadrant. It is not a single board, but four tiny ESCs can be installed separately on the arms, or installed together like a PCB under the flight controller.

X-Racer Quadrant 2-6S 32Bit BLHeli_32 ESCs:

  • With 25AMp constant RMS, 30A max.
  • Less than 3 grams each piece and about 11.5 grams for a set of 4 pieces.
  • Small in size: 18 x 24mm
  • Compatible to BetaflightF3 Flight Controller

The new X-Racer Quadrant 25A is flashed with the latest BLHeli_32 program. Dshot up to at least Dshot1200, and at rates up to at least 32kHz is now supported.

The new X-Racer Quadrant 35A is also flashed with the latest BLHeli_32 program. Dshot up to at least Dshot1200, and at rates up to at least 32kHz is now supported.

  • Rated at 35A current with a max of 50 amps of current load (Less than 10s).
  • Small in size: 20 x 24mm
  • 3 grams each piece and about 12 grams for a set of 4 pieces.
  • Compatible to BetaflightF3 Flight Controller

Also these two ESCs have other common features:

  • Use the latest BLHeli_32 firmware.
  • Dshot up to at least Dshot1200.

2017 Drone Racing League Season have started on June 20th

After what has seemed like a long wait, the Drone Racing League’s (DRL) second season is due to air this evening. Plenty has happened behind the scenes at the company since its immersive action was last on TV. Here’s hoping that all the changes front of house are for the better.

With all the excitement at DRL away from the track, which has included lucrative partnerships with the likes of Amazon and Allianz and big broadcasting deals with ESPN and Sky, it’s now time to focus on the action.

The 2017 DRL season is made up of six races. Featuring original, three-dimensional racecourses, the new season will play out at several iconic venues around the world. 16 of the world’s best drone pilots have been invited to fly DRL’s custom fleet of 600 Racer3 drones.

The season will air as 16 one-hour episodes beginning on ESPN 2 at 8pm EST. It’ll also be broadcast in more than 75 countries around the world on networks including Sky Sports, ProsiebenSat.1 7MAXX, Disney XD and OSN.

“The 2017 DRL season brings the world’s greatest drone pilots to the most incredible race courses ever designed, testing pilot skill and pushing the custom DRL drone, theRacer3, to high speed crashes and split second finishes,” said DRL CEO and Founder Nicholas Horbaczewski.

“Right from the start, this season will capture the imagination of traditional and new race fans around the world.”

One track that’s survived from the first season is Level 1: Miami Nights. It’ll be the opener, taking place at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins.

DRL has promised that the 2017 season will progress “to more unique venues, with dramatic vertical lines and new obstacles to test pilots’ skills, and push the limit of the Racer3.”

After Miami, the 2017 season moves on to Atlanta, New Orleans, Boston, and Munich, culminating in the World Championship in London, set in the historic Alexandra Palace.

What is BLHeli_32?

BLHeli_32 is a new firmware for 32 bit ESCs that has recently been announced by Steffen, the contributor for the original BLHeli and BLHeli_S projects.

Its worth noting that despite the fact it shares the name with its BLHeli counterparts, the code is in fact written from scratch and is closed source. This means the code will not be released to the community, similar to how the KISS ESC code is not released.

This firmware should bring significant improvements to ESC performance at the moment, compared to BLHeli_S. Here are a few of the advantages:

  • Programmable pwm frequency, up to 48kHz, that can run motors even smoother, and also allows for moving of small but potentially disturbing humps in the throttle response. All ESCs have these bumps, with BLHeli_32 they can now be moved in the rpm range, to a place where the system has low sensitivity to them.
  • Auto timing. Which is not the option to choose if you’re after max power. But if you want the most efficient running with very good robustness against desync, it is the perfect choice.
  • Voltage and current limiting. Which is implemented in the code, and will be supported on some ESCs. Voltage limiting is desirable for fixed wing crafts. And current limiting adds protection against ESC failure.
  • Programmable brake on stop force. Which allows control of the braking of fixed wing props.
  • Improved direction change in bidirectional mode.
  • More functionality coming in the future. Such as setup from the FC by using Dshot commands. Such as telemetry functionality. There is room to grow performance and functionality.
  • Runs D-Shot 1200 straight out of the box (up to at least a rate of 32kHz supported)
