What is the Future of Drones?

No doubt that drones are playing a key role in our world over the next few decades but what are these versatile machines truly capable of? Drones have already become part of our society as we speak. These are the unmanned vehicles or remote controlled drones hovering over our skies either used for recreational or military purposes. We have also seen drones being used not only in military operations but through filmmaking, photography and other recreational purposes. This begs the question on what the future lies ahead for drones. Here are some insights and predictions on the future of drones.

  • Delivery drones  

Back in 2013, Amazon announced that they plan to use delivey drones. It sounds a take from a science fiction flick, but Amazon is serious about it. They are still conducting test runs and experiments as we speak to ensure satety and reliability of the project. This is one bold move to integrate the capabilities of using drones to the courier industry.

  • Search and rescue drones

Drones can be used for search and rescue operations. They can be used in dangerous terrain, extreme temperatures, and fatal radiation levels. Drones are’t limited to flying gadgets. There’s a big opportunity for innovation for underwater and land drones. Drones can be used to find survivors from shipwrecks. Small drones that are capable in creeping through crevices of collapsed buildings or houses can also be used by rescue teams.

  • Ambulance drones

In development, ambulance drones are  capable of airlifting injured individuals to safety or to nearby hospitals so that medical attention can be given to them immediately. Ambulance drones can be used for disaster relief, military and police operations, and for remote places where medical care is scarce.

  • Drones for space exploration

Not saying that rovers would be obsolete, but using drones to explore and gather data from space exploration is not a bad idea. By using drones that are properly configured to fly in accordance to a plane’s gravitational pull; we can now explore mountains and volcanoes of different planets that the rover would be unable to reach. This also goes with drones for underwater exploaation of one fo Jupiter’s moon, Europe. In development is a squid-like drone that is able to maneuver itself in Europa’s lakes and oceans.

  • Police operations

Drones can be used for legitimate police operations. They won’t be equipped with machine guns, but they’ll be able to help the police catch the bad guys. Equipped with higy definition cameras, night vision and thermal sensors, these drones can be used for surveillance to aid the police in their flight against crime.

  • Construction drones

Soon there will be drones that can be used to help in the construction of high-rise buildings. These drones can also be used to conduct surveying and mapping for a certain project. This helps architects and engineers to hasten the process of surveying the project site while the drone sends data to them in real time. These drones can also be used in high-risk areas that are difficult to reach by a human team. This will greatly benefit surveyors and the construction industy in general, as it would save time and effort in gathering information before a project goes green.

  • Faster drones

There have been more and more manufacturers of drones like DJI, GoPro, and YI Technology, but the one from YI Technology claimed they are the fastest tri-copter drone compared to others. They said it can run speeds up to 75 miles per hour(120 km/h) equipped with a gimbal and anaction camera. Made of carbon fiber, unlike others that are made from lightweight aluminum and alloys.

With a rise of sales in commercial drones, expect manufacturers to improve their product to make them easier to control and for their drones to have improved strength, handling, and maneuverability. With different innovations and improvement in drone technology, expect more opportunities for drones to be used in our everyday life. Just like how the saying goes “The sky’s the limit.

 

 

Diff or Dump about Betaflight, can you tell it apart them?

A new command “diff” was introduced back in Betaflight 3.0, it’s much better than using “dump” for troubleshoot and managing parameter in CLI. Still some people are not aware of it, so let’s mention it for more details。

As you all know, Betaflight ‘diff ‘ and ‘diff all’ commands greatly simplify configuration management by only displaying CLI values that are changed.

What Does Dump Do?

‘dump’ simply prints all the configurable settings in a pastable form(over 300 lines long).

What Does Diff Do? 

There are 2 command variants: “diff” and “diff all”.

diff” prints only the paremeters in the current profile and current rate profiles that are changed from the default. By adding a command argument “showdefaults”(entering “diff showdefaults” in CLI), the original values are also displayed in a comment line (beginning with a #) for all changed values.

diff all” displays only the values in all profiles and rate profiles that are different from the default values. Why use Diff over Dump?

When using diff, you no longer need to go over all the settings, only the ones that different from defaults. This largely simplifies paremeter/feature management and makes trouble-shooting easier.

This also works slightly better for firmware updates, where you need to make a setting backup, you can use”diff all showdefaults”, the list is likely to be much shorter.

However this feature is only available since Betaflitht V3.0,  won’t work for those are still using older firmware before that.

We are not saying we should replace dump with diff, it will still be useful in some cases. But unless you have a good reason to use dump, try diff.
